St. Lawrence County EC Bob Farrington KD2QLH is looking for ham operators who would like to spend a day or two in the sunshine on the St Lawrence River on August 4th and 5th 2023 during the 20th annual St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Fishing Tournament.
Anglers are stationed at various points along the river from Waddington to Ogdensburg. At each location, a ham operator reports the fish that are caught to the headquarters in Waddington. The Net is all on VHF frequencies using simplex channels.
Bob recognizes that a commitment this early is hard and knows there will be emergencies that change things. However, it is important to start early. Last year the hams had to abandon their long-standing help with this event due to a lack of participation. Bob hopes they can make a firm commitment soon for this year’s event and resume ham radio’s place in helping the community.
Providing communications for large events such as this is an excellent real-world training opportunity for emergency operations. It also has significant value as a way to demonstrate the usefulness of amateur radio to emergency managers and the general public.
