On Saturday April 26, NNY Section ARES will hold a Spring Simulated Emergency Test concentrating on the use of 60 Meter NVIS for local/regional Emergency Communications.
25 years ago the Amateur Radio emergency communications community petitioned for frequencies in between 80 and 40 meters, because sometimes 3.5 MHz is below optimum and 7 MHz is above optimum for beyond line of sight NVIS use. The NTIA came up with 5 "channels" in the 5 MHz range that could be opened for Amateur Radio use on a secondary basis. There is nothing technically different about operating on 60 Meters, however there are specific rules for operating on these channels.
The format will be a little different, but I think it will get us a lot of information pretty quickly. The net will be called by a Net Control Station (probably WU2M) who will take check-ins from all stations. We will have two groups of check-ins. The first group will be EOC's and County EC's. These stations will be here for the entire SET and will communicate pass exchange signal reports with all stations who check in. The other group will be individual stations. The individual stations will exchange signal reports will all the EOC's and EC's on frequency. Net control will keep a separate list of each. When a regular check-in checks in, net control will direct him to call the EOC stations and the EC's individually and pass a signal report. The station is then free to either secure or stick around and log what he / she hears from other regular check-in stations. If this is done properly, it will not take more than One minute or so to complete the exchanges.
I hope that you will join us for this first ever NNY Spring SET. We are hopeful that we will be able to compile a useful list of signal reports and data both throughout the NNY section and the state as well. We need your help to make this work. Please keep in mind that for regular check-in stations, you will not have to invest a lot of time to make a meaningful contribution to the SET. It is the goal to have most regular check-in stations in and out in 15 minutes or so. However, everyone is welcome to stick around.
There will be a series of Zoom informational sessions on 60 Meters and the NNY SET plans prior to the April event.
